Minecraft

http://www.minecraft.net/

A game where you can build anything out of an array of elements… anything, rollercoasters, castles, lava moats, etc. It’s like a world building game, but, every night it gets taken over by zombies and you must survive.

Honestly, it’s a hard game to describe, it has elements of Dwarf Fortress, zombie games, super mario, portal, legos… and many of it’s own unique ideas.

The TF2 dev team seems to be enraptured with it:

And, it is pretty fun. I set up a server, and you can join it here:

http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=bac3b007f5dd5ab5caf7c20f4c1a5ec9

(or you can find it in the list of servers here, named CoFR Minecraft Server: http://www.minecraft.net/servers.jsp )

It is browser based, so no install needed. If you wish to be admin on the server, send me your registered playername and I will add you (if I know you, that is).
If you purchase the game you can play the alpha versions, which have all the new features, but the server is running classic version, which should be free to play.

Urban Dead

I am shocked to see that I have never made a main page posting about the main draw to the forums.

Urban Dead is a web-based zombie vs. survivor game. I didn’t think I would get hooked on a web-based game since the time I ran Black Nova here (only old school drzy fans will remember… all one of you). I have personally been playing this since last year.

The game has inventory, levels, ability to play as a zombie or survivor, and has pretty regular updates and additions. It creatively uses javascript and CSS to make an almost graphic looking naviagtion system, while still being entirely graphic-less. Although, there are many firefox extensions released that enhance the game.

We have a survivor and a zombie group here at drzy that grew from a CoFR and friends group. Check out the Urban Dead portion of the drzy forums if you are interested in joining our group and have some connection to me, CoFR, or one of the members of our group, MRH.

More info about the game itself is at the Urban Dead Wiki

Freetar Hero

A freeware PC version of Guitar Hero with editable and shareable songs is on the way, called Freetar Hero. The editor is demo’d below, but it isn’t released yet. The actual game will come later.

I imagine we’ll still have to pony up the bucks for the controller and a way to hook it up to the PC.

Classic Atari Game Inspired Watches

Fossil is currently selling a new watch line taken from the old home gaming days of Atari. Apparently there will be 3 watches, with Breakout, Centipede, and Asteroids demos running in the background.

It would have been much cooler if they were playable games, but they are still pretty sharp:

Wii Tennis Video

When Nintendo first started talking about the Nintendo Revolution, it sounded like a bunch of hype. I mean, they promised alot for the Gamecube, too, but the final product wasn’t all that impressive.

Later they showed off their unique controller design. This tweaked my interest, but it still seemed like spin to try and drum up support with little actual planning behind it.

Lately there have been a flood of demos and videos released, just before and after the name change to Wii, especially. Each one I see makes me want this console more and more, and I am not much of a console player.

Miyamoto demos the Nintendo controller by playing Tennis on the Wii, in this video. I have to admit, this is how I imagined future gaming would be like when I would wile away hours at the arcade as a kid in the ’80s. Nintendo is really onto something here, and if they can pull it off, especially at a decent pricepoint, I think it’s going to be massive.

Free PSP (Sony Playstation Portable)

Since the FreeIpods.com thing progressed rather nicely, I signed up for another site that offers free PSPs (Sony Playstation Portable).

The site is hosted by OfferCentric, who is the other big website giving away free stuff. Gratis, who ran the FreeIpods.com site, was pretty good, but OfferCentric has tons more offers to choose from.
