I recently came across 500px as a gallery site, and I really like it. The portfolio, image viewer, quality of photos, submission and ranking, and ease of use is really good, and they are currently working on Lightroom exporters and such.

They need to work on the search and tagging a bit, I think Flickr still beats them in that capacity. Anyways, I am not here to review (yet), but to post my first photo uploaded on their site.

I’ll continue to post things to Flickr, but I’m starting to transition to 500px for a trial period. If it compares favorably to Flickr end up buying a year of their service, I will probably not renew my Flickr Pro.

edit2: fixed!
edit: well, it seems to post in only one size, which is a bit bigger than the column width. I will figure it out later.

EDIT: Thanks for the comments! Please LIKE the video to bookmark it–and so you can see the upcoming film!

___

This video highlights several clips we’ve made using our new High Dynamic Range (HDR) process. Video is captured on two Canon 5D mark II DSLRs, each capturing the exact same subject via a beam splitter. The cameras are configured so that they record different exposure values, e.g., one camera is overexposed, the other underexposed. After the footage has been recorded, we use a variety of HDR processing tools to combine the video from the two cameras, yielding the clips you see above.

HDR Video provides filmmakers with many exciting new opportunities. Not only can HDR video create interesting effects, it can also allow for even exposure where artificial lighting is unavailable or impractical. For example, when a subject is backlit, one camera could be set to properly expose the subject, the other the sky, resulting in video with perfect exposure throughout.

We will continue to develop and improve the HDR video process for better results and efficiency. For more information, check out our website www.sovietmontage.com.

An eon in modern time ago (a year) I posted a small extrinsic blurb about the upcoming Microsoft technology dubbed Photosynth. I thought the link explained and showed it better than I could, so no need for a further post. But now it is released, and now it deserves the shoutout.

This is a simple “synth”. It was taken by some guy in Austin on his cameraphone. He took a few shots of the 360 bridge (a pretty noticeable landmark), just across the river from where I used to work at Origin. I think this shows the power of Photosynth. First of all, this was easy to find, I just did a Photosynth search for Austin, and it was the first choice. Second this was only a few short photos in a cameraphone. This isn’t the Taj Mahal demo with 400 shots with a $5000 DSLR camera. No, this is normal guy with possibly time on his break from work to snap a few shots through a window and upload them. You can still zoom in on them and skirt all around his view.. and it captures his view amazingly well.

That’s all I have to say, except one more thing, kudos to Microsoft to allowing embed code. Normally that wouldn’t get kudos, because every website on earth has some free embedable content on it nowadays, but kudos for finally coming around. (but an iframe? seriously?)
