10 Years for Forever
Everyone’s favorite vaporware turns ten today. Well, the announcement for Duke Nukem Forever was made 10 years ago.
Engine changes, team changes, and season changes have passed, and still they have an “active development team” for this game. That’s one great racket, getting paid developer’s salaries for 10 years and not producing squat.
Here’s to hoping I never have to make this post for Team Fortress 2.
They should have released it in 2001, when it looked like this video. It looks like it would have been a blast, and hell, even now looks like it would be fun!

Saturn’s Spinning Hexagon in the Sky
A lot of fantastical space news in the past few months, I can’t believe I missed this one.
In March, NASA released images of a Saturn that show an odd hexagon formation spinning over it’s north pole. The pictures are stunning, especially the moving gif.
“This is a very strange feature, lying in a precise geometric fashion with six nearly equally straight sides,” said Kevin Baines, atmospheric expert and member of Cassini’s visual and infrared mapping spectrometer team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. “We’ve never seen anything like this on any other planet. Indeed, Saturn’s thick atmosphere where circularly-shaped waves and convective cells dominate is perhaps the last place you’d expect to see such a six-sided geometric figure, yet there it is.”

WWII Mechs duke it out
This viral video has been sweeping over the net and coming at me from every direction. I usually don’t repost ones that are so widespread, but, since drzy has taken a turn towards robots lately, I feel I must.
So, I give you Nazi, American, and even Japanese mechs in an alternate past… a short CG film by the folks at cee-gee.net.

NASA Spacecraft Make First 3-D Images of the Sun
Two spacecraft, just enough apart to make a stereoscopic image of anything they are pointng at, have been used to make stereoscopic images of the Sun.
Here is the release statement.
And here is the link to the page with all the pictures. Although they are true stereoscopic, they don’t seem to be offering the pictures in anything but red/blue 3d glasses format. There are movies as well as pictures.

Kurt Vonnegut - gone
One of the best science fiction authors has passed. Yes, some do not consider him with the dreaded moniker “science fiction author”, but that is why he was so good. His imagined worlds and futures as breathing realities that he used to paint the actual novel. The novels weren’t really about the technology or shooting-spaceships-pew-pew.
They weren’t so much about “What if?”, but more of: “This is how it will be, how do we thrive in it?” Always with a dark whimsical slant.
- Be careful what you pretend to be because you are what you pretend to be.
- Life happens too fast for you ever to think about it. If you could just persuade people of this, but they insist on amassing information.
and the last thing I read on him, about dependence on oil and global warming and the end of the world.
“No. No. Because I’m eighty-three years old. The lying bastards! On the package Brown & Williamson promised to kill me. Instead, their cigarettes didn’t work. Now I’m forced to suffer leaders with names like Bush and Dick and, up until recently, ‘Colon.’”….
You join the long list of those people that will be missed. Goodbye Kurt.

Lord of the Rings Online - World Tour Begins
What is the World Tour? It’s fancy name for an open beta.
Honestly, this game isn’t all that impressive. The graphics are dated (you can tell that from the screenshots), and it doesn’t have anything that jumps out at me as being original. But hey, it’s free for now, and it’s set in the best fantasy world ever conceived. So I’m playing it!

Well, now, under great pressure from the weight of multiple emails, they are producing it. I don’t see a time frame listed yet.
