Wordpress 2.0.5 released
Wordpress has been updated to version 2.0.5. Foolishly, I immediately updated the site without more than a glance at the new features. But, luckily, aside from a few minor hiccups, everything is working as swimmingly as it had been before. Plugins and all.
If you notice any weird anomalies, let me know through email, comments, or on the forum.

Fabio solders
No really, if you don’t want Fabio or soldering or the two combined, then don’t click this.
Apparently, Fabio is an old school gadget geek, and here he is demonstrating mad soldering skills at a Geek Squad event.

Sony stomps on Lik-Sang
The Hong Kong retailer of many good things has succumbed to legal pressure from Sony and has been forced to shut down.
Lik-Sang has been known to import consoles and products from asian markets to western markets and Sony decided they didn’t like it.
I liked them for there cheap compatible console hardware that you couldn’t get anywhere in the US. Oh well. Sony isn’t gaining any fans by doing this. I can’t wait until the PS3 is a big flop.
Did I hear the Wii calling? Why, yes I did! November 19, folks! And me with no money!

Scott Adams Speaks Again
Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert cartoon, reported over a year ago that he had a rare condition that caused him to lose his ability to speak. He could, at times, sing and speak in certain situations, but the part of his brain that controlled normal talking became “disconnected”. The term for this malady is Spasmodic Dysphonia. Of all the reported cases of it, none have overcome it.
Until yesterday.
Scott explains how he guided his brain into rewiring itself with a little genius and a little luck.

Firefox 2.0 official release
Well, it’s out now. Although, most people already were using the highly stable public release candidates.
Nevertheless, if you want the final version of Firefox 2.0, you can grab it from the Mozilla now.
Highly recommended, and with some simple, but nice, new features.

ChaCha to fortune
People have gone after Google in every way imaginable. Since the big G cornered the search engine market, “competitors” have been trying to build a better mousetrap to beat them. Many theorized Google killers would be the likes of Ask.com with natural language entries or about.com with added content and insight to searches. But things boiled down to simply fighting over who would be #2.
ChaCha.com is going at it from another angle. To put it bluntly: people search for you. The concept is: you can plug your keywords into the engine, but the results that appear are ones that actual people searched for and chose. The searchers are called “Guides”. If the keyword combo entered doesn’t produce any results, that means it hasn’t been searched by a guide yet, and you are asked if you want a guide to help you search. You could also start with a guide, there’s nothing stopping that.
Honestly, it sounds kinda hokey. It feels like a reversal from the automation of the internet, which we are so used to. Human interaction on most websites is all secondhand or in editorial or published style. But with ChaCha, the guide consults you directly, does your searching for you as per their expertise, and that’s it. There’s no charge to the user beyond seeing some ads on the side of your results. The guide initiates a one-on-one chat session while searching and showing the end-user the links chosen.
The hokeyness subsided when I realized I had a chance to try out the guide program. You see, guides are paid to help you search. It’s not a lot… but I’ve reverted to starving student status, and super flexible things that pay money (on a special debit card, no less) are right up my alley.
Guide applications are by invite only, but I have yet to find a online invitation scheme that I could not wiggle my way into. As it turns out, I have a few spare invites for all one of you readers. If you leave a comment on this post, I will send you one. All I ask is that you be serious about trying this, not just as some five minute goof. I only get so many invites, and the people who get them are added to my “network”, of which I receive 10% of whatever they earn for my lonesome self.
So, if my loyal two readers wants invites, simply comment on this article. The important part is making sure your email is accurate, or the invite email will obviously not get to you.

Play NES, in your browser, right now
Sure, NES emulators have been around for awhile. But this is the easiest way to hop in an old school Nintendo game anywhere. vNES. It plays in your browser. Nothing to install, no ROMs to grab, no crappy Flash hack. Just Nintendo goodness.
I can’t stop playing Excitebike.

YouTube the cat
It’s doubtful that “YouTube” is the cat’s actual name, but that’s the only description on the video, so ok. Normally I don’t like to post random non-tech-related funny stuff, but sometimes I can’t help it. I guess that’s why i made the “pure humor” category. This cat cracked me up.

Google snaps up YouTube
If buying something for 1.85 billion clams can be considered “snapping up”.
When Google Video was first launched, I thought that was going to be the de facto way to see clips on the net. But it never really panned out. At least, not with the explosive success of YouTube. For one of the few times, another company did something that Google was trying, and did it better.
Google did not rest on its pride. They recognized this, and sought to buy them out. I don’t know if that can be considered noble, or sharky business tactics, or neither.
I hope that they do what we all hoped would come about with Google Video… combining the fantastic searching power of Google with the great easy interface of YouTube.

Quote of the arbitrary time span
Suppose you’re thinking about a plate of shrimp. Suddenly somebody will say like ‘plate’ or ’shrimp’ or ‘plate of shrimp’, out of the blue, no explanation. No point in looking for one either; it’s all part of the cosmic unconsciousness.

A new meaning for “Death from Above”
The picture seems to show a cheerful woman demonstrating a helicopter toy. In actuality it is a prototype of a explosive delivering automated killing machine. One that is not guided or flown, but one that picks out targets on its owns and decides where to deliver its lethal payload. The idea is to drop hundreds or even thousands of these in an area and have them seek and destroy.
Darpa has already awarded contracts to develop these critters to several companies.
The specifications call for this robot to be able to withstand several forms of deployment. Delivery by artillery and bomb drop, for instance. The military envisions a bomb, holding hundreds, or even thousands, to be dropped on the battlefield in preparation for war. And during the actual battles, to ferret out hidden enemies or weapons.
